Why I write

Today I was thinking about why I actually write content for my website. There really aren’t many readers, so you might wonder what the point is. I realised that I can think of a few points, but somehow not as a complete answer. But all the individual aspects written down together actually give the complete answer. And that’s already the first reason why I’m doing this and why, for example, posts like my declaration of love for amateur radio have come about. The following points are further reasons for writing:

Documenting personal projects has the decisive advantage that even failed projects become sort of a success. So a failed project still has the added value of becoming a blog article. This can either mean that others do not make the same mistake or that tips from readers can help to save the project after all.

Public documentation helps me to be less sloppy. Before I upload a picture with horrible solder joints, I’d rather do it again and then do it better. Or, when writing about how to do something, I realize that there is a better solution for it which I then try to apply.

Furthermore, I constantly have new projects. As soon as one is finished, I’m looking for the next one. My brain then seems to throw everything old overboard. So if I document my current project, I don’t lose anything.

If I say in a conversation that I once did a certain project, I can provide a URL to the complete documentation instead of trying to remember details. I think this is much more effective than listing the individual steps from memory.

To be honest, I also enjoy receiving positive and/or constructive feedback. Since my website doesn’t have a comment function, but writing emails is an effort, I receive much less feedback, but I consider it to be of higher quality. This keeps trolls away and feedback private.

I sometimes like to look back at what I’ve done and written just to feel good about it. This is especially helpful in times when you doubt yourself.

Overall, I see this website as a kind of personal CV or résumé. I think that the reader will get a good basic idea of what makes me tick and what interests me.

In the end, every personal website with useful, entertaining, interesting etc. content helps to preserve the good old internet, which we are currently losing more and more.
